Just
watched an amazing video where a buffalo calf attacked by a pride of lion (and
a crocodile). The amazing part is how the herd of buffaloes saved the calf back
from the pride. Animals are driven by survival instinct not by emotions. It is
understandable when the mother (or parents) of the baby animals tries to
protect them. There too, I was under the impression that, they would only make
a halfhearted attempt to defend the child from an opponent as strong as mighty
lions.
This
video reveals a different behavior of animals in a group. What is their
communication strategy? It must me vocal. I have read about buffalo cows
forming circle to protect their young ones by keeping them inside the circle
and charging to ward off predators. However, what is shown in the video is
slightly different. It is a calculated and coordinated attack on a group of
strong lions that has kept one of the mother’s child as a hostage. Of course it
is not an unexpected behavior. But I am really impressed by their bravery and the
tactic of taking out lions one by one and eventually saving the calf.
One
lion was last seen disappearing to the other side of the hill being chased off
by two buffaloes. I believe they might have taught him a thing or two about how
to kick the ass! Thanks to those who shot the video and published on YouTube.
