What is the single most distinguishing feature of a successful person? It is not talent, IQ (whatever that means) or anything that I would generally associate with success, it is a trail called "Grit". As the dictionary definition, it can loosely be defined as perseverance. An uncompromising pursuit for perfection through practice. That is the general premise of the work by Dr. Angela Duckworth, who wrote a book by the same name. We take that trait for granted or misunderstand it for hard work. Grit consist of consistent hard work. Not burst of crazy work and then a period of laziness. This book also gave me the idea that passion (for an activity) is, something that needs to be discovered through trial and error and of course perseverance.

Another equally important idea in this contest (of self-improvement, success and life satisfaction) is "Growth mindset". Based on the pioneering work of Dr. Carol Dwek. It is the idea that one can always improve on any aspect of life if they are willing to work on it. It is a "Mindset" (Book's name) that needs to be built in every child. Most of the children are raised to succeed at any cost, to continuously get A's on everything they study. The objective of such children, throughout their life will be getting an A at any cost. Not understanding the concept or learning from failures. Having a growth mindset will equip all of us to take on challenges, without the fear of failure. This healthy relationship with failure and set back is nothing but Grit. In short, both growth mindset and grit are the two sides of a coin. Two great concepts for everyone to learn and practice.
