What make us who we are? What defines us? I believe that, it is not only the dreams of becoming something/someone, but what are we willing to sacrifice for it. Most of us can not have it all. I have only limited amount of time, brain power and energy. So I have to pick and chose in life. I want to be an explorer, a wildlife vet, a novelist, a movie director, a musician, a programmar, a scientist, a great parent, son, brother, husband..... the list go on this is true for most of us. Many people are good at more than one of this, depending on the life situation. If one is genrally open minded with a less demanding and supporting partner, they can be a good parent, partner, social being. One can be a good musician and anything else, if there primary focus in not be a traveling musician, so on and so forth. But the list I presented above is all I want to be (part of the actual list is longer).
Here, I have to make choices. The choice is not about what I want to, but what am I willing to sacrifice without repenting too much. From my life I know that if you are willing to sacrifice the joy to be with an enchanting little girl, social connections, and a stress free life, you can be a full time scientist. Well, I am obviously joking about that. But, I do believe that, to the most part, if you ask most humans what they want, the answer is generally same, a happy family and healthy life. Some people will have to sacrifice their career to achieve that goal, some people will have to sacrifice the dream of becoming a millionaire to achieve that goal, some people will have to sacrifice the dream of traveling the world, well some lucky one do not have to sacrifice anything. Unfortunately, they become role model for most people and also a source of misery. Life does not have to be fair always. We have to figure our what works for us, and many times, suck up and move on...
