How to be more productive: Dedicate an undistracted fixed amount of time every day for the activity you want to excel in. I learned it in the faculty diversity-promoting organization. They had writing challenge, in which you commit to writing for at least 30 min every day for 2 weeks. I joined the drive and found that it is very effective. I turned off my phone, all open website and sat in front of the computer with an open word document for 30 minutes. Just stayed there thinking about the topic I was planning to write, making notes on what to read, making a general outline. I did not write too much but found that the exercise is very effective.
I am an easily distracted person, with too many things going on in the tiny brain. So dedicating small chunks of time for each activity seems to be an excellent approach. I am applying that principle to improve my writing. There is also dedicated time to read exclusively about other topics of interest. We love to do multi-task, but the fact of the matter is that our brain does just one job at a time (that require active attention). Some people are exceptionally good at switching very fast from one activity to another, but even them in the millisecond time frame they focus on only one task at a time.
