"If you know the way broadly, you will see it in everything"_ Miyamoto Musashi
It means that excellence is a transferable skill. If you have succeeded in something, as a result of consistent and diligent work, you would know the formula for success. You will understand the concept of single mindedness, focus, strategy, perseverance, hardwork and consistency. There is a great book by Robert Greene called "Mastery" (which I read only 60%), which is treatise on the core principles of attaining mastery in the craft of your choice. It is essentially the analysis of life of some successful people, such as Darwin, Einstein, Da Vinci, Mozart etc. in the course of history and distill the wisdom learned from their life for application in everyones life. The truth is that the core principle of success and mastery are same. Find your craft, with which you feel a primal connection to. Then find a good mentor(s), do wise apprenticeship and exapnd your horizon. This is just in nutshell, but there is much more to it.
It is a quote from the book "The book of five rings" written by Musashi, a Japanese swordman form 17th century. It is a fascinating quote. It directly imply the philosophy of excellence. Once gain mastery in any craft, it would be easy to replicate it in any other situation.

So the key is learn to do something very well and through that learn the process of mastery. Once you have a keen awareness of the process you can apply it to any field. Success is feed forward loop. Once you succeed in something, it would help you to build the confidence and allow you to take more risk and replicate the success principles in new areas.
And finally one more pearl of wisdom from the master swordsman "Do Nothing Which is of No Use".
